Everyone who thinks that he can stand between you and God is your enemy, as the New Testament states, "There's one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ" (1 Timothy 2:5).
Completion comes not from merits or performance acts; it is a gift from grace, but despite this, we need an awakening from below so that we can ignite an awakening from above. The awakening from below is ignited by our intentions; only then can we ignite the light from the upper worlds so that it can descend to correct our spoiled vessels. Egoism and selfishness are the only things that are blocking the flow of light. The upper worlds are ruled by the spiritual force of giving, while our world is ruled by the evil inclination, which is the desire to receive for the self alone. To become able to give, we need a community of like-minded people who are following only one goal, namely the unity with God. Only through the work in a community can I adopt attributes of sharing. These attributes are given to me once I have put effort into elevating my intentions to ask for the light of God to come to correct my spoiled, selfish desires.
The only thing we have to strengthen ourselves is in faith above reason. Works must come out from an inner renewed spirit and not vice versa. You can do everyday good works of sharing, but if they're not coming from an inner change, they will only create more chaos. Someone who is born again in spirit has no other choice than following God. Although the evil inclination is always a magnetic force, which does everything to let us fall, we must try to stay connected with God in every moment of our lives. Only through this connection can we overcome every obstacle or challenge. Being connected with the light of God ignites the flow of light from the upper worlds. When we're connected, we're inspired and know exactly what to do. This connection in Kabbalah is described as the face-to-face union of Malchut with Zeir Anpin. Malchut normally describes our physical world, while Zeir Anpin is representative of the upper dimension. When they're connected, things flow, things go easy. When they're disconnected, we're feeling lack and despair.
The spiritual ladder consists of various degrees, which represent the levels of approaching the light of God. The higher we ascend, the more fulfilled our life is becoming, not only spiritually but also materially. Materiality is the strongest aspect of the desire to receive. Many people have not understood what Jesus meant, that we would even receive everything back a hundred times, also in this world, when we're ready to give up everything for him (Mark 10:30). The ultimate goal of spirituality is not only to earn the light of the world to come but also to create heaven on earth. All in all, we never can merit the eternal light of the Creator, because for endless abundance, we would have to work endlessly for it, which is not possible. In the end, everything is a gift from above, but as said, we also need the awakening from below.
